A month ago, the Philadelphia Phillies were a ball club three games over .500. Now they have the best record in the National League. How did they get here? Well it starts with them being 18-6 in the month of May including winners of ten of their last eleven.
Pitching
It all starts with that five ounce baseball. The Phillies pitching staff has been throwing it like a wiffle ball this month. In May, the Phillies are top five in home runs allowed (18), strikeouts per nine innings pitched (9.66), and shutouts (5).
The Phillies set the tone early with their starting pitching. Their rotation is deep with Zack Wheeler and Jesús Luzardo making early bids for the Cy Young Award and Ranger Suárez picking up where he left off last season. Suárez just came off his fourth straight quality start Tuesday, punching out eight through six innings pitched.
Once the starter departs from the mound it does not get any easier for opponents. The Phillies are a mix of flamethrowers and finesse guys that fill up the strike zone. José Alvarado’s 80-game suspension was a significant blow to the bullpen, but guys have stepped up.
Off-season acquisition Jordan Romano has taken over the Phillies’ closing role and has pitched great since. In May, Romano has an impressive 0.83 WHIP and a 15:2 strikeout-to-walk ratio, while converting five of six save opportunities.
Offense
Similar to pitching, the Phillies are sitting in the top five of several offensive statistics this month. In May, they are third in batting average (.270), fifth in runs (124) and fifth in slugging percentage (.436). Bryce Harper has played a huge role in the Phillies’ offensive explosion; Harper has been scorching hot lately. In the last eleven games Harper has slashed .390/.447/.561. On Tuesday, Harper was hit by a pitch on the right elbow, which forced him to the exit game. Later, Harper would be listed as day-to-day.
Alec Bohm has also heated up in the past two weeks. The last twelve games Bohm has slashed .340/.360/.596 with three homers. Hitting safely in eleven of those twelve games. Bohm has provided an extra spark to this Phillies’ offense.
The Phillies will play a doubleheader today due inclement weather conditions last night. The first game will start at 1:05pm and second at 6:45pm.
