The Red Sox big Offseason Acquisition, 3B Alex Bregman will reportedly opt out of his contract and hit Free Agency after only 1 season on the team.
Bregman's sole year in Boston was good and bad. Bregman only played 114 games thanks to a strained quad before the All Star Break but still had a productive season when healthy.

His season included a .273/.360/.462 slashline. He had 18 home runs and 62 RBIs, with 28 doubles and 55 base on balls. He would have a scary 9 errors on the year which was tied for 2nd most on the team and a surprise after one of the biggest reasons of bringing him in being his gold glove at third.
Bregman's potential opt-out was talked about all season in Boston and doesn't come to much of a surprise. In the 2025 Offseason, Bregman signed a 3year-$120 Million contract with the Red Sox with a key twist. Bregman included a player option for every season on the deal meaning he could opt out at the end of every season which is exactly what he did.
In 2025, Bregman wasn't getting the long term contract the 31-year old was looking for. His opt out-based contract was mainly structured so that if he had a good season, he could leave to look for a longer contract in Free Agency and we are right on schedule.
Bregman is going to be a Top-5 Free Agent in the 2026 market and could easily pull the same AAV on his next contract but for as many as 7 years in total.
It's not impossible for Bregman to come back to the Red Sox for the future but it is unlikely. With the Red Sox likely to pursue Pete Alonso and other pitchers this offseason, Boston will be looking to make prized-prospect Marcelo Mayer the future of the third baseman position.
