The defending Super Bowl Champions Philadelphia Eagles were back at Lincoln Financial Field looking for their third straight win against the Denver Broncos, and looking to remain undefeated through the first five games for the third consecutive season. The Broncos had different plans going into Sunday’s matchup, as they looked to get their first road win of the season in the hardest opponent they will face all season.
The Birds went into the fourth quarter, winning 17-3 with the home crowd behind them. If the Broncos wanted to make it interesting, they would have to put drives together offensively and get stops defensively. The Broncos defense also forced two straight three-and-outs to give Nix and the offense plenty of time to orchestrate scoring drives for his squad.
The Broncos capped off their 18 unanswered points with a 36-yard field goal, extending their lead to four.
The Eagles attempted to rally in their last offensive possession. Eventually, the Eagles had to attempt a Hail Mary in a last ditch effort to preserve their undefeated season, but after a failed tip drill, the football harmlessly hit the grass.
This lost exposed some chinks in the armor of this Eagles ball club. The Eagles have not beaten a team this year, more than one possession. They have struggled to finish the game the same way they started, which leads to opponents hanging around. This season, the Eagles rank 7th in first half scoring, but drop down to 19th in second half scoring.
Key players like All-Pro’s Saquon Barkley and AJ Brown have yet to find their footing this season. Barkley has yet to eclipse the 100-yard mark, and AJ Brown has had one 100-yard performance this (Week 3) in all other games. He is only averaging just over 21 receiving yards per game. These guys will have to get going if the Eagles plan on making a deep playoff run.
The Eagles have a quick turnaround as they headed to the Meadowlands for a Thursday night showdown against their division rivals, the New York Giants. Let’s see if they can rebound from yesterday’s disappointment, and get back to their winning ways.
