The one-seeded Houston Cougars got off to a quick start on their home floor, keeping a grip on the lead throughout the game, defeating the Oakland Golden Grizzlies 78-45.

Within the first seven minutes of the game, Houston was by double digits. They hold on to that, stifling any form of a run by the Golden Bears in the 32-point victory.

Freshman guard Kingston Flemings and senior guard Emmanuel Sharp both scored 19 a piece as they led Houston in scoring. Freshman Chris Cenac Jr. also added 11 points in the win.

Game Changer: Rebounds

Houston out-rebounded Oakland 46-32, which led to second chance opportunities, and Houston’s 40-20 paint scoring advantage.

Next for the Cougars: Houston will travel to Birmingham, Alabama to face 22 Auburn Tigers in the RxBenefits Battleground 2k25. The Cougars first ranked matchup of the season. This game will be on Sunday at 2 PM EST on ESPN.

20 TENNESSEE VS NORTH FLORIDA

The Tennessee Volunteers took a while to warm up the engine in their 99-66 win over the North Florida Ospreys.

The first 15 minutes of the first half were competitive, with lead changes, and the game staying within single digits throughout that period. North Florida struck early, having a balanced scoring attack, scoring from in the paint and on the perimeter.

But late in the first half is when the Volunteers started to pull away. They would go on a 15-0 run to close the first half. Taking a 47-30 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the lead ballooned to 30 points. The size, strength, and depth of the Volunteers outmatched the Ospreys, as they would go on several scoring runs throughout the half.

Sophomore forward J.P. Estrella led the Volunteers in scoring off the bench, dropping 23 points and adding 10 boards, notching his second consecutive double-double. Senior Ja’Kobi Gillespie also added 21 points in the victory.

Game Changer: Assists

The game started to get away from North Florida when they stopped moving the basketball. The Ospreys were out-assisted 26-13 in the box score. This makes it harder to win, when you are undersized. The ball movement was key to the Ospreys getting open looks for their shooters on the floor in the first half.

On the other hand, the Volunteers were in a giving mood as they used ball movement to penetrate gaps in the lane. The extra pass mindset led to eleven different Volunteers scoring in the victory.

Next for the Volunteers: The Volunteers will stay in the friendly confines of Thompson-Boling Arena as they host Rice next Monday. Tip-off is at 8:30 PM EST on the SEC Network.

OREGON STATE VS NORTH TEXAS

One of the most exciting games of the night happened in the late window. The Oregon State Beavers closed the game on a 20-5 run to defeat the North Texas Mean Green in a narrow 66-64 win to remain undefeated.

The Mean Green led by as much as 13 in the second half. The Beavers stayed focused, continuing to be aggressive offensively, drawing fouls and causing turnovers defensively.

It was total team effort. The Beavers struggled to put the ball in the basket, only shooting 37% from the field. A late run to close the game allowed the Beavers to chomp down a double digit deficit, overcoming the rough shooting night and closing the comeback victory.

Game Changer: Blunders

North Texas could not get out on their own way down the stretch of the game, which led to them losing their double digit lead. In the last 7:09 of the game, the Mean Green had seven fouls and seven turnovers. This was highlighted by the game-losing mistake when sophomore guard Je’Shawn Stevenson called timeout when North Texas had none remaining with 1.4 seconds left, and the game tied at 64. This led to the Beavers winning the game on technical free throws.

Next for the Beavers: The Beavers undefeated season will be tested as they visit the undefeated Oregon Ducks next Monday. That game will be 10:00 EST on FS1.
