Ever since Tom Brady left the Patriots in the offseason for the Buccaneers, there rumors out there as to whether Belichick would explore a trade for Julian Edelman. Many experts thought that eventually Belichick would ship Edelman elsewhere. When news broke that Gronkowski was coming out of retirement and gets traded to Tampa Bay to join forces with Brady, it appeared that Edelman might be next on the chopping block.
Wasn't the case thankfully. Despite all the changes that the Patriots have gone through this offseason, Edelman has proven that he is committed to the Patriots and whoever thew starting quarterback was to be. Edelman was a key leader during the offseason, working out with second year quarterback Jarrett Stidham who was at the time projected to be the Patriots starting quarterback entering the 2020 Season.
On June 30th, this plans changed when free agent quarterback Cam Newton came to town, impressed in his offseason workouts, connecting with teammates almost instantly and eventually won the starting job. After a Week One victory over the Miami Dolphins, Newton fits perfectly with the Patriots as he brings some energy to the team and his incredible personality.
Edelman and Newton are quickly becoming the new Batman and Robin in New England has Edelman has been impressed with Newton, in the short time that he has been here. During training camp Edelman had these comments to say about Newton's work ethic: "he just has a good energy about him. He's very energetic and has a lot of energy to him. He makes it fun. He's always in a pretty good mood fro the time that he's been here. I can't speak on any other place or this that, but from what I have seen and what I have learned, he seems like a guy who loves football, has an energy about him and enjoys it. He enjoys football."
Well that was clear this past Sunday when Newton rushed for two touchdowns that help[ed lead the Patriots to a 21-11 win over the Miami Dolphins. Edelman had a quite day catching five passes from newton for just 57 yards. Other than the the four games in 2016 when Brady was suspended due to his role in the delegate scandal, Edelman has caught passes thrown by only TOM BRADY throughout his entire career, and that trend officially ended when he caught five passes from someone else not named Brady.
Despite the changes in the offense, Edelman is not concerned about his role in the offense. In fact he is embracing the new offense and will make plays when his number is called. Edelman has said that he doesn't think the there is any situation that Newton cannot handle and trusts the coaching staff in their preparation. Edelman just worries about what he needs to do to not only help Newton succeed, but focus on the plays he needs to make in order to help the team win as well.
Obviously both Edelman and Newton have dealt with significant injuries themselves over the last couple of seasons each. Edelman tearing his ACL in 2018, and last season, Newton missing all but two games due to shoulder and foot injuries that derailed his 2019 season. Edelman did gain over 1,000 yards last season, but is consistent injuries, especially to his surgically repaired knee, derailed his production late in the season.
Fair to say that Edelman has liked Newton's presence here in New England so far as he brings a spark of energy not only in practice, but during the one game that they have been together. Edelman would like his new partner in crime to maybe lighten up a little bit when it comes to running with the football still try to get him and other receiver involved, as we all know that Edelman is fierce competitor on the field. However, despite that, Edelman loves have Newton here because of his energy that he possess, which should make it a fun season in New England for not only this season, but maybe for season's to come.
The Patriots are gearing up for a Week 2 mashup against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday Night Football this Sunday.
