Despite having one of the worst records in the MLB this season, there is a lot of young talent in the Mile High City. One of the bright spots is the former first overall pick, Mickey Moniak.
Moniak was signed on March 27, a day before Opening Day. He signed a one-year, two million dollar deal after he was released by the Los Angeles Angels two days before. Moniak is having the best statistical season of his career in 2025. He is slashing .271/.317/.539 with 17 home runs, which is a career high. The major improvement that Moniak has seen at the dish is hitting with runners in scoring position; he is hitting an impressive .339 in those situations with a 1.132 OPS.
Moniak is coming off a month of July that has propelled him to the top of the Rockie lineup. He slashed .364/.403/.682 with ten extra base hits. He also had six multi-hit games in July. Moniak’s hot bat has helped him remain in the lineup. In an effort to keep the 27-year-old in the lineup, Moniak has played at least 190 innings in each outfield position this season.
Moniak says that he has found a home in Colorado: “I definitely want to be a Rockie for as long as possible” when asked about him possibly being dealt in this past trade deadline.
The breakout season that Moniak has had so far has made the Rockies front office rethink their future in the Colorado outfield. The Rockies have many outfield prospects that are chopping the bit to make it to the big leagues. Moniak will be able to survive another year in the league and see another contract if he continues to play at this level.
