On January 5th, The New England Patriots decided to part ways with Head Coach Jerod Mayo and Offensive Coordinator Alex Van Pelt, per multiple sources.
After a Week 18 victory against the Buffalo Bills, the Patriots wasted no time making moves. With the firings coming just hours after their final game of the 2024 season, it seemed like the front office had their minds made up; and looking back on the season, the firings of Mayo and Van Pelt seemed inevitable.
The Pats had an absolute disaster of a season, as they finished with an abysmal 4-13 record. Though there were some bright spots at times, mainly from the play of Quarterback Drake Maye and Cornerback Christain Gonzalez, it was a tough year to be a Patriots Fan. Both sides of the ball were bottom dwellers in comparison to the rest of the league, exposing the many holes the team need to fill within the roster.
With Mayo and Van Pelt gone, it signals the team’s desire to regroup and head in a different direction. Now, which direction that will be remains to be seen, but hopefully New England will have learned from their mistakes, and conduct a proper search for their new Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator.
With over 100 million dollars in cap space and the 4th pick in the NFL Draft, New England has a great opportunity to turn things around, but it starts with the coaching. Mayo clearly was not the answer, so it is crucial that the Patriots make the right decision on who to lead the team going into a very important offseason.
