Providence Gridiron Club HOF Honors

The Providence Gridiron Club is honoring four standouts for their contributions to the game of football here in the Ocean State. 

Being honored are GEORGE NAGEL (posthumously), longtime educator, coach and administrator, who lived in East Greenwich for years and taught and coached at Aldrich, Warwick Vets and Scituate, starting the program there and having them at championship caliber in four years. He was long time Assistant and then Principal at Cranston West High School, he also did a stint as Principal at EG High. He passed away in 2008.

BRAD CARSON played on URI's  nationally ranked 1984/1985 ranked teams . Both teams were Yankee Conference, Lambert Cup & ECAC champions. Brad was 1st team All Yankee conference,2nd team All New England and Hon. Mention All American as a defensive lineman. He was a track & field standout and football at North Kingstown High School. He was on same team with as many as 15 PGC HOF members, He is a member of the NKHS & URI athletic hall of fames. Brad in early 2000's was ranked in grappling by NAGA at super heavyweight. Won Silver medal in Pan Am's in BJJ. He is a season ticket holder and booster for URI/NKHS and still finds time to come up to Rhody from Florida in the fall for games.

PETE RIOS, a longtime coach in the Providence School System was the man responsible for turning the Central football program around. He took a lack luster program and instilled discipline and pride in the Knights players and made them a topic of discussion on the RIHS football scene and left the program as a championship level competitor in Division 1.

BILL PHILLIPS is receiving the Hall of Fame's Rhode Island Official's Award. The long time ref was known for his hard, fair and consistent calls in making the game a pleasure for players, coaches, and fans.The Providence Gridiron Club is honoring four standouts from the past at two ceremonies in February; the first is a brunch to be held at Rhode Island Country Club on Sunday, February 12th, at 10am, tickets are $25 per person, reservations preferred.  The second is the Hall of Fame banquet on Wednesday, February 15th at 7pm at the Quonset 'O' Club.  Tickets are $ 40 per person for this Prime Rib dinner and reservations are a must.  See details below for The Hall of Fame would like former Members to come back and join as at the brunch or dinner to support this years class of inductees.Tickets for either function can be reserved by contacting Robert Izzi at robert.izzi@aol.com or at 401- 378-4393
