The long-awaited call-up for the number 8 prospect in the MLB has finally come to fruition. On May 24th, Boston Red Sox shortstop Marcelo Mayer was called up to the big leagues and played his first career MLB game.
As previously stated, this was a long time coming for Mayer. As a top 10 prospect in baseball (for multiple years), while also raking in Spring Training (.333 batting average, .983 OPS, 11 RBI), a case could have been made for Mayer to have made the Major League roster to begin with. Though he did not make the cut to start the season, Mayer kept the momentum going in AAA, batting .271 with 9 home runs, 43 RBI, and a .818 OPS in 170 at-bats.
Mayer was called up in light of the news that Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman will be missing significant time with a severe quad strain. With an opening in the infield, Boston wasted no time, calling up Mayer and putting him in the lineup that same day.
Mayer, hitting 6th in the order, has had very little experience at third base in his career (6 career games played at 3B in the minors), but adjusted well and looked very solid at the corner infield spot. His debut did not go as planned (0 for 4 with 3 strikeouts), but Mayer has already begun to make some waves for the Sox.
In his first five games, Mayer is hitting .263 with a .668 OPS, which is not bad at all considering the sudden call-up. It is still extremely early, but the fact Mayer has already had multiple 2-hit games, including a couple of doubles, is very promising. Most importantly, he looks comfortable at the plate so far, which is what Boston is looking for.
From what we have seen thus far, Boston clearly has faith in Mayer's ability. From throwing him at third base, to hitting him as high as 4th in the lineup, Mayer has a huge opportunity to show that he belongs in the majors and on this Boston Red Sox team.
