The Red Sox stand currently with a 29-34 record and sit in 4th place of the AL East. Last night, the team lost its MLB-leading 17th 1-run game of the season and in Manager Alex Cora's own words, "We keep making the same mistakes."
After a decent start to the season through it's first 30 games, the Red Sox have gone 13-20 since and have shown no momentum to turn it around as of late.
The team isn't without it's stars as players like Garrett Crochet who leads the league in Ks and 6th in ERA and Rafael Devers who after starting the season 0-19 with 15 Ks, has turned his season around and is now 7th in OBP and tied for 1st in RBIs.
Hitting

Actually as a team, the Red Sox hitting has been one of the best in the league with Top-10 numbers in batting average, on-base percentage, hits, runs, doubles, home runs, runs batted in and stolen bases. Their top-4 hitters of Devers, Duran, Abreu and Bregman (before his injury), have been amongst the hottest hitters in the league and together average a .275/.360/.492 slash-line.
Even the Red Sox hitters that are struggling most statistically aren't terrible compared to the worst of the league. By far the worst full-time hitter on the team is Trevor Story, slashing .218/.266/.328. While these stats are indeed bad, especially for one of the team's supposed "marquee batters", most teams have players slashing much worse than this.
Newest members of the team Kristian Campbell and Marcelo Mayer are averaging .224 and .200 respectively. With their potential bound to make strides this season, they both could be a factor to a mid-season push by this lineup.
The biggest loss as of late has been Alex Bregman's quad injury that has caused him to miss play since May 23rd. In that time, the Red Sox are 3-8. Bregman leads the team batting average, OPS, doubles and stolen bases. Bregman has stated his recovery has been "going in warp speed," but his return date is still up in the air and estimated around mid-to-late June.
The Red Sox have been in a downward spiral sine Bregman hit the IL-list and it's fair to say they need to find out how to win without Bregman or this season could be over before he even returns to the field.
Pitching

Contrastingly, the Red Sox pitching has been anything but consistent. Besides Crochet, no starting pitcher has under a 3.90 ERA on the season.
While Crochet is in legitimate running for the AL Cy Young, no other starter has more than 50 IP or 50 Ks. Their next best start would be Hunter Dobbins with a 4.06 ERA, a 1.33 WHIP and only 4 home runs allowed in 44.1 IP. Other starters like Walker Buehler and Brayan Bello have had great games and they've had bad ones even though both have a positive Win-Loss record. Most noticeably, Tanner Houck hasn't pitched since May 12th and has a 8.04 ERA on the season. Currently on IL, Houck is considered "not close" to starting his rehab assignment.
The bullpen has had it's good games and it's bad, with FA signing Aroldis Chapman being the standout with 9/10 saves, a 1.80 ERA and a .96 WHIP. Other standouts have been Brennan Bernandino with a .89 WHIP and Justin Slaten with a .90 WHIP. All other qualifying relief pitchers have above a 1.30 WHIP.

Weekly Predictions

Tonight, the Red Sox finish their series against the Angels and then start a 3 game series in New York against the Yankees. This will be the first series between the two rivals of the season with their second series starting only 5 days after the first ends. The Yankees are 37-22 on the season with a 7-3 record in their last 10. Unfortunately for the Red Sox, the Yankees are also 19-9 at home for the season and have won 8 of their last 9.
Between the two Yankees series, the Rays will also come to Boston for a 3-game visit. The Rays are a 31-29 on the season but are also 7-3 in their last 10 and 5-5 when away. So far the Red Sox hold a 2-1 advantage against the Rays this season even though their lone loss was their worst of the season, a 16-1 drumming.
The Sox's recent momentum doesn't make their next series give much hope as they're expected to lose both series with possible sweeps incoming. Both teams are in the Top-10 of ERA, WHIP and Earned Runs. If the Red Sox are to have any hope, they'll need to come out swinging early.
