The hottest team in baseball right now is one of the biggest surprises in recent years. On Wednesday afternoon, the Milwaukee Brewers completed a sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates, winning in a 12-5. They now have won 12 straight ball games and now sit alone as the best team in baseball with a 76-44 record. The most impressive part is that the team does not have a hitter batting over .300 right now, but the club feeds off their pitching staff. The Brewers team ERA is 3.59, which is third in the league. This season, the Brewers have had two key contributors that have helped them reach 30 games over .500 for the first time since 2011.

First, it starts off with the Brewers ace, Freddy Peralta. Peralta has always been a solid pitcher throughout his career, but this year he has taken it up a notch. Peralta is 14-5 with a 2.90 ERA and 148 strikeouts. Offenses are struggling to square up Peralta. He has an uncanny ability to understand how to use his pitching repertoire effectively throughout the game.

The 29-year-old features a four-seam fastball, changeup, curveball, and slider. While Peralta throws his four-seam fastball over half the time, he is not afraid to use his secondary pitches. He throws his changeup and curveball over 10 percent of the time. This ability to throw all of his pitches for strikes makes him unpredictable for the hitters, especially when he gets in advantage counts.

According to MLB’s Baseball Savant, Peralta ranks in the 90th percentile in hard hit percentage. When Peralta is on, he has starts like he did on Tuesday, where he went six scoreless innings, allowing three hits, one walk, and striking out seven. This is a confidence booster for Peralta, who has struggled with control in recent starts. In the four games before Tuesday’s outing, Peralta averaged three walks per start. If Peralta builds off of Tuesday, it can lead to continued success for him as the Brewers go into the playoffs.

Next, Christian Yelich has led a Brewers offense that ranks second in batting average (.259), second in on base percentage (.332), and second in runs scored (620). Yelich is slashing .266/.344/.456 with a club-leading 23 home runs and 81 RBI.

In 2025, Yelich found his power surge again. We still have about a month and a half left in the regular season, and he already has 23 home runs, which is the most since his 2019, where he hit 44 home runs.

Yelich has heated it up just in time for the dog days of August. The 13-year veteran has slashed .370/.453/.587 with three home runs in August. In 11 games played in August, Yelich has reached base safely in nine, recorded multiple hits in five, and scored multiple runs in four.

The Brewers look to keep their momentum heading into a seven game road trip that starts in Cincinnati and ends in Wrigleyville. It will be tough to keep their winning streak alive against their divisional opponents, but if these two continue to perform at a high level, the Brew Crew have a good chance of continuing their winning ways.
