Friday night, the Boston Red Sox clinched their spot in the 2025 postseason after a thrilling walk-off win at Fenway over the Detroit Tigers. This will be the Red Sox first postseason appearance since 2021, and a key part to the club’s success is the revival of Trevor Story.
In March 2022, Story signed a six-year, $140 million deal after six seasons as a Colorado Rockie, where he received back-to-back all-star selections and Silver Slugger awards (2018-2019).
Up to this point, the change of scenery has not served Story well. In Colorado, Story averaged nearly 125 games played per season. Story is now in his fourth season in Beantown, and this is his first time playing over 100 games in a season since becoming a Red Sox. Story had suffered injuries that made him miss some significant time, including an UCL injury in his right elbow in 2023 and left shoulder injury in 2024.
Going into this season, the now 32-year-old is in his fourth year of his contract and has yet to show why he was there. With young talent, like Marcelo Mayer nipping at his heels, 2025 could have been the end of Story’s time in Boston, but the veteran had other plans.
Despite a slow start to the season, Story did not let his early struggles or the negativity from the Boston faithful affect him. Fast forward to today, Story is leading the team in hits (161), runs (91), home runs (25), RBI (96), and stolen bases (31).
From being put in the doghouse by Boston media to being the talk of the town. Story’s season has rejuvenated this Boston club, and has led to their first playoff appearance in three seasons.
The stage is set. The Red Sox will have a rematch of the 2021 postseason, facing off against their all-time rival, New York Yankees, in a best-of-three Wild Card Series. Boston is not looking for the story to end here. Let’s see if Story can keep the momentum heading into the postseason. First pitch is tomorrow at 6:08 PM.
Thank you for reading!
