Mike Trout was on the IL for exactly one month. In typical Trout fashion, he got hurt playing hard.

On April 30, Trout, in search of an infield single, busted it down the line and landed hard on first base. That landing resulted in a bruised left knee, which is the same knee he had surgery on last year to repair a torn meniscus. The knee bruise would lead to Trout’s sixth IL stint in the last five years. Trout returned to the diamond last Friday and has been swinging a hot bat since digging into the box.

Before the injury, Trout started the year putting up career-low numbers. In his first 29 games, Trout slashed .179/.264/.462. The injury could have also provided a much needed reset for Trout.

The 33-year-old has been back for six games and has served as the Halos designated hitter to limit the time on his feet, while keeping his generational bat in the lineup. In those games, Trout is slashing .476/.542/.667 with a 454-foot blast that he launched over the Green Monster Monday night. Trout’s second homer in legendary Fenway Park in 35 career games up to that point.

“Trusting the process in the cage, [you] know it is going to turn around. Some balls are starting to fall.” Trout said after his second three-hit performance since his return Monday night. A healthy Trout can do a lot for a club struggling to find consistency as we rapidly approach the All-Star break.

The Angels won their first series since April 21, taking 2-of-3 from the Boston Red Sox. They look to take this momentum into their six-game home stand as they battle their division rival, Seattle Mariners, on Friday night. First pitch will be at 9:38 EST.
