To score or not to score?
That was the question Patriots running back TreyVeyon Henderson was asking himself in the middle of a full sprint down the sideline of Raymond James Stadium in the fourth quarter of the Patriots’ game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.
With his team in the lead, with time waning in the game, Henderson looked to his coaches to see if he should score his second touchdown or if he should go down to bleed seconds off the clock. He chose the former, which ended up being the game-winning score.
“We needed it,” said Patriots Head Coach Mike Vrabel after Sunday’s game. “He was thinking the right thing, and today, in the game, the way that it was - they needed two touchdowns, I think it was okay.”
The touchdown run was one of two explosive plays Henderson had in the 28-23 win in Tampa Bay. He also ran for 147 yards, giving the Pats a huge boost offensively.
Now, after Thursday’s 27-14 win over the New York Jets, the Patriots are on fire, and running back TreyVeyon Henderson is making his case for the RB1 position. Since running back Rhamondre Stevenson was taken out of the lineup due to injury, Henderson stepped up.
Henderson rushed for 62 yards on 19 carries for two touchdowns while catching a third on Thursday, boasting the best two games of his young career with five total touchdowns and over 200 yards rushing in that span.
“It's a journey, the NFL comes with a lot of highs and lows,” said Henderson. “I think the biggest thing is preparation going into the week, and with the reps that we have, just trying my best to take advantage of them.”
Henderson was humble when asked about how his performance felt, similar to quarterback Drake Maye’s interview postgame with the Thursday Night Football crew. It speaks to a larger team-first mentality that Henderson, Maye, and the rest of the Patriots have adopted throughout this season.
This is something that Henderson has taken and run with, literally, stepping up for his team when they needed a boost in the running game.
“I think it was a big time for him stepping up,” said Maye. “It's been great for him to get all these reps, to keep getting these reps. He wants to be great. He's just showing up every day and asking questions.”
Now the Patriots get a mini Bye Week as they prepare for another favorable stretch against the Bengals, Giants, and their upcoming bye week in Week 14 before a critical home game against the Buffalo Bills the following week.
Winners of eight consecutive games, the team currently holds the number one spot in the AFC and holds the best record in football. The Patriots seem to be returning to their old ways of winning, but the season is still young, and competition will get tougher the closer it gets to January. No matter what, Henderson proved he will be a crucial key in keeping that momentum going for the rest of the season.
