The long-awaited and highly anticipated start to the 2026 Formula 1 season is officially underway, with plenty of storylines already taking shape. From Mercedes' rapid pace, to mechanical faults, to even a crash by a superstar, we are already getting an idea of what this season could hold.

Qualifying took place on Saturday morning EST, with George Russell topping the grid with an impressive gap between the cars behind. With the next non-Mercedes car qualifying eight-tenths of a second behind Russell, Mercedes are the clear favorites come race time. That being said, there could be a major shakeup on lap 1, with the Ferrari race starts having looked great in testing.

Before I give you my predictions for the unpredictable track, here is a look at the starting grid for the race (Updated: 3:30 p.m. EST):

  1. George Russell

  2. Kimi Antonelli

  3. Isack Hadjar

  4. Charles Leclerc

  5. Oscar Piastri

  6. Lando Norris

  7. Lewis Hamilton

  8. Liam Lawson

  9. Arvid Lindblad

  10. Gabriel Bortoleto

  11. Nick Hülkenberg

  12. Ollie Bearman

  13. Esteban Ocon

  14. Pierre Gasly

  15. Alex Albon

  16. Franco Colapinto

  17. Fernando Alonso

  18. Sergio Perez

  19. Valtteri Bottas

  20. Max Verstappen

  21. Carlos Sainz (Did not participate)

  22. Lance Stroll (Did not participate)

So, with all that out of the way, here are my 5 boldest predictions for the Australian Grand Prix!

At Least 5 Cars will DNF During the Race

If there is one thing that is for sure about these new cars, it is that none of them can be relied upon. From the dominant Mercedes to the disastrous Aston Martin, I would not be surprised if any team's car broke down due to some sort of engine issue.

Thus, I think that multiple drivers will suffer from the lack of reliability these engines present. Who exactly it will be is to be determined, but it is already a given that neither Aston Martin will make it through the race. Audi and Williams have also both shown severe reliability concerns, so be on the lookout for these teams as well.

Both Haas Drivers will Score Points

Haas were a tad disappointing in qualifying this weekend, but I expect a step up during the race. They are carrying a Ferrari engine, which should give them a huge boost off the line, while also showing enough pace to fight among the top of the midfield. Both Ocon and Bearman have been neck and neck at about the same pace too, which is a great sign.

I also think a big contributor will be the cars ahead of them. I do not trust Audi's engine to make it a full race length, while also carrying the belief that at least one of the VCARBs will fall off at the start of the race. Look out for Haas to finish the weekend strong and with a great result by race end.

Max Verstappen will NOT Score Points

I always say that you can never fully count out Max Verstappen, but I feel that making up 10 places in a car he is far from comfortable in is a big ask during race 1.

Would I be surprised if he does score points? Absolutely not, which is why I am constituting this as a bold prediction. Red Bull has shown good race pace all weekend long; we have also seen on multiple different occasions where Verstappen makes up for a mistake in qualifying with ease. I do think he will get close to the points, but not enough to score any.

BOTH Ferraris will Finish Outside the Top-5

I don't know where their pace went, but Ferrari seemed to have fooled us again. Granted, no race has been completed yet, but Ferrari was supposed to be one of the quickest teams when it came to one-lap pace, and they weren't. Red Bull seemed quicker than Ferrari, with an argument to be made that McLaren was right there as well.

I think Ferrari will get a good start off the line, but will not be able to sustain it over the course of an entire race. I just have a feeling that Ferrari will run into a bunch of problems that will compromise race pace and result in opponents taking advantage.

George Russell will Win the Australian Grand Prix by at LEAST 30 Seconds

I think George Russell is going to dominate this race. Mercedes truly were sandbagging (hiding their pace) until the very last moment. I mean, Kimi Antonelli qualified 2nd handily with a newly repaired car with zero setup changes.

Russell will lead this race from start to finish in my eyes. As long as his engine does not fail him (knock on wood!), he should grow the gap between him and the rest of the field rather easily. Mercedes are the top dogs and have shown everything we expected them to; all that's left is to reap the rewards come race time.
