Tuesday night, Red Sox rookie Roman Anthony was removed from the game after suffering a left oblique strain.
In the fourth inning, Anthony swung through a 3-2 curveball, going down on strikes. The 21-year-old went back to the Red Sox dugout, clutching his lower back. In the fifth inning, Anthony was replaced by fellow rookie Nick Eaton.
Yesterday afternoon, the Red Sox manager Alex Cora mentioned that the injury could keep Anthony out for 4-6 weeks, which indicates that strain is on a higher grade. This is a blow to a Red Sox team that looks to finish the season strong and clinch their first playoff berth since 2021.
Anthony was a huge part of the Red Sox turning their season around. Baseball's former number one top prospect was called up on June 9, after drilling ten home runs in 58 games played at Triple-A Worcester, including a home run that traveled 497 feet.
The Red Sox outfielder struggled when he was first called up. Through 21 games, Anthony was a .200 hitter with only one homer. In July, he started to find his footing in the league. Anthony would slash .329/.452/.494 and would reach safely in 22 off 24 games.
That is all that the Red Sox front office needed to see out of their rising superstar. On August 6, Anthony signed an 8-year extension worth $130 million, locking him into being the centerpiece of the historic organization for years to come. Since signing the contract, the youngster has been the hottest hitter in the Sox lineup. He has slashed .306/.389/.520 with six home runs and earned AL Rookie of the Month honors for the month of August.
Anthony is optimistic that he could return as early as late September, but that remains to be seen. It is a chance that he could be out indefinitely, but we will see how Anthony progresses as the Sox head into October.
